Joint opposition to elect Qasim as Parliament Speaker

The joint opposition coalition has agreed to appoint founder of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim as the parliament speaker.

In a meeting held at the main headquarter of Jumhooree Party, the joint opposition agreed to appoint Qasim Ibrahim as the parliament speaker once Abdullah Maseeh is removed from the post. The decision was made unanimously with the vote of all members present, according to Jumhooree Party.

51 parliamentarians signed and submitted a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed which has been scheduled for November 8. Meanwhile, Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdul Raheem Abdulla has expressed interest for the post of the parliament speaker if Maseeh is removed from the post.

Parliament speaker will be appointed by a secret vote among parliamentarians, according to Article 85 of the constitution.
