The Parliament of Maldives has decided to deliberate whether President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be sworn in on Republic Day, as per tradition.
Addressing a press conference held at the Parliament, Deputy Speaker Moosa Manik said the motion to deliberate whether the President-Elect will be sworn in on November 11 would be included in the agenda for the sitting scheduled for Sunday, as an item proposed by the Chair.
Answering a question posed by a journalist, the parliament deputy speaker said he personally believes the President-Elect should be sworn in on November 11. However, the deputy speaker was quick to add a decision on the matter would be reached by the parliament majority.
Referring to the no-confidence motion filed against the Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed with 51 signatories, Moosa Manik stated as per law, the deputy speaker would carry out necessary arrangements.
Expressing his belief the motion should go to vote at a sitting attended by all parliamentarians, the deputy speaker stated he has appealed the Supreme Court to deliver a swift verdict in the cases related to the 8 disputed seats.
At the press conference, Moosa applauded the autonomy being displayed by the powers of the state, in the wake of the presidential election.
