Maldives lacks adequate emergency response mechanism: Dr. Mahir

Member of Transition Committee Dr. Shah Mahir has stated Maldives currently lacks an adequate emergency response mechanism and that the incoming government will establish such an adequate emergency response mechanism in the country.

Addressing Criticon 2018, a conference organised by the Maldives Society of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Mahir said from the information gathered during the transition process, it is evident that an adequate emergency response mechanism is non-existent in Maldives. Noting the committee has been monitoring healthcare services provided across the country, Dr. Mahir revealed only emergency vessels are in place to transport patients from one place to another.

The transition committee member noticed the lack of facilities or trained personnel in the emergency vessels to cater to the needs of the patients who are medevac’d in critical conditions. He said in their efforts to strengthen the healthcare sector, the incoming government would ensure that the critical care and emergency medicine mechanism would be improved. He added personnel on sea, air and land ambulances would be trained in providing critical care and emergency medicine.
