Supreme Court defers implementation of Nasheed's jail sentence

Supreme Court of Maldives has issued a temporary order deferring the implementation of the jail sentence on former President Mohamed Nasheed until the top court reviews the lower court ruling regarding the terrorism charges raised against him.

The temporary order was issued, after the court accepted the appeal filed by the Prosecutor General's Office, asking the bench to review the 13-year jail sentence passed on Nasheed by the Criminal Court. In its appeal, the Prosecutor General's Office requested for a temporary order as any attempt to immediately implement the jail sentence on the former president's return might result in irrecoverable damages. In the temporary order, the Supreme Court called on the state to refrain from taking any action against former President Nasheed.

At a press conference held following the order, Spokesperson of the President-Elect Mariya Ahmed Didi welcomed the decision and announced Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will travel to Sri Lanka and will return with the former President Nasheed.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has organised numerous activities to celebrate the return of the former president on November 1.
