Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka advises caution over the political situation

Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka has urged Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka to refrain from attending public gatherings.

The advisory of Maldivian Embassy came in the wake of huge political gatherings held in parts of Sri Lanka. Maldivian Embassy has advised to be extra cautious when on roads and outside.

President Maithripala Sirisena sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and swore in ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa to replace him, plunging the country into turmoil. Wickremesinghe said his sacking was illegal and maintained that he was still prime minister and had the support of a majority of members of parliament. Rajapaksa, meanwhile, assumed his duties at the prime minister's office.
