Former First Lady Laila to return to Maldives with former President Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has revealed his wife Laila Ali will return to Maldives along with him.

In a tweet revealing the return of the former first couple, Nasheed stated they are excited to return to Maldives. Former First Lady Laila has made tremendous efforts in the international arena to secure the freedom of her husband.

While former President Nasheed and Laila are expected to arrive to Maldives tomorrow, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been preparing to celebrate the return colourfully. President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is currently in Sri Lanka to accompany Nasheed when he returns to Maldives.

Nasheed is currently serving a 13-year jail sentence on terrorism charges for unlawfully detaining the then Chief Judge of Criminal Court while serving as president. However, the Supreme Court has issued a temporary order deferring the implementation of the jail sentence until the top court reviews the lower court ruling regarding the terrorism charges raised against him.
