Parliament of Maldives has unanimously passed to dissolute the Anti-Defection Act which took effect in July 2017.
At a parliament sitting, 37 parliamentarians voted in favour, while 17 voted against and 5 abstaining. The bill on the dissolution of the Anti-Defection Act was submitted to the parliament on October 24.
Delivering the first reading of the bill, Parliamentarian Riyaz Rasheed cited the disadvantages 12 parliamentarians had to face for a large part of their parliamentary tenure, as the reason behind submitting the bill on the dissolution of the Anti-Defection Act.
Parliamentarians elected on political party tickets will lose their seat if they leave their party, get expelled, or switch parties, according to the Anti-Defection Act which took effect on July.
