Most important objective of Adaalath Party will be to maintain coalition: Sheikh Imran

President of Adaalath Party Imran Abdulla has revealed the most important objective of the party for the next five years will be to maintain the coalition and the government of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He made the remarks at a press conference held following the temporary Supreme Court order to defer the implementation of the 12-year jail sentence passed on him until the bench comes to a decision after reviewing the sentence.

Speaking to media for the first time in over three years, Sheikh Imran Abdulla stated the achievement in the president election held on September 23 was due to the strong bond of the coalition, adding for that reason, it is important to maintain the coalition which the people have trusted. Noting Adaalath Party will prioritise maintaining and making the coalition stronger, Imran Abdulla said the people who voted for the coalition will never forgive if the coalition breaks away.

Furthermore, Sheikh Imran affirmed he will work to release all the prisoners held captive following the 2015 May Day rally. Terrorism charges were raised against Imran for delivering a speech which encouraged violence, during the protest, staged by the opposition coalition. The Criminal Court found Imran guilty of terrorism and was convicted on February 16, 2016. However, Supreme Court issued a temporary order to defer the implementation of the 12-year jail sentence passed on the President of Adhaalath Party Shiekh Imran Abdulla until the bench comes to a decision after reviewing the sentence.

Following his release, Imran Abdulla participated in the gathering held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to celebrate the arrival of former President Mohamed Nasheed to Maldives.
