Supreme Court defers jail sentence implementation on former Defence Minister and former Deputy Speaker

Supreme Court of Maldives has deferred implementation of jail sentences on former Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd.) Mohamed Nazim and former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim.

Supreme Court, in separate orders, ruled the implementation of jail sentences on both of them are deferred until the top court reviews the court ruling. In the temporary order, the Supreme Court called on the state to refrain from taking any action against former defence minister and former deputy speaker.

The former defence minister was jailed for 11 years after finding guilty for keeping a pistol in his residence against the laws and regulations of Maldives. His representatives appealed the case at the Supreme Court, but was noted accepted.

Meanwhile, the former deputy speaker was sentenced for 25 years in prison for deception and fraud.
