12 parliamentarians seek compensation; requests criminal probe

The reinstated 12 parliamentarians have filed a case at Maldives Police Service requesting a criminal probe against former Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Speaking to media after filing the case, Parliamentarian Mohamed Ameeth said their removal from parliament affected their respective constituencies and citizens rather than them alone. Ameeth said their illegal removal from parliament directly affects the citizens, adding Maseeh did not exert any efforts to protect the parliamentarians when they were held in prison and when their rights were violated.

The parliamentarians had requested to investigate many allegations against the former speaker Abdulla Maseeh. The reinstated parliamentarians revealed they will file cases at relevant authorities to seek compensation for the injustice, adding the role of Maseeh must be investigated.

The parliamentarians were barred from entering the parliament and representing their parties and constituencies for over a year. During the period, their salaries, allowances and other benefits were cut off.
