Elections Commission of Maldives has revealed discussions are underway with political parties and parliamentarians to amend the constitution rather than increasing the constituencies.
Speaking on a programme aired of PSM News, Director at Elections Commission Hassan Zakariyya stated as the population increases it is expected the constituencies will simultaneously increase every five years. However, Hassan Zakariyya said it is an economic burden, adding discussions have commenced to figure out the most convenient and effective procedure to follow in terms of constituencies.
Every 5,000 people must be represented by a single parliamentarian, according to the constitution. However, with the increased number of people migrating to the capital, it has become crucial to increase the constituencies in Male' City.
Revealing the latest information regarding the parliamentary elections of Maldives, Analyst Ahmed Muaz stated preparations will begin within the upcoming two weeks. Ahmed Muaz noted conducting training programmes for officials and disseminating information will begin soon.
The parliamentary elections is scheduled for late March and the commission has decided to introduce two new constituencies in the capital city.
