Former presidents of Maldives have extended republic day greetings to Maldivians. Former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Mohamed Nasheed, Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has sent out greetings of the day.
In this regard, in a tweet, the second president of the second republic, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom highlighted the efforts exerted by past leaders and Maldivians to establish a governing system which prioritises national unity and peace. Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom served the longest after a republic was established in Maldives. He served for six consecutive terms from 1978 to 2008, until he was defeated by Mohamed Nasheed in the first multi-party presidential election.
Moreover, in a tweet, former President Mohamed Nasheed noted the republic system was adapted from Rome, which was further strengthened during the cold war and the French philosophy. Nasheed further revealed within 40 years, Maldives saw only two presidents, noting a new president must have sworn-in today. Nasheed also shared an article he wrote in 2003 titled a fall of a leader. He played an important role in adopting a multi-party democracy in Maldives and is the first democratically elected president since Maldives adopted a republic system.
Meanwhile, former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik also extended greetings on the 50th Republic Day of Maldives. In a tweet, Mohamed Waheed appreciated and thanked the tireless efforts by the former presidents in developing the country and requested President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to move the country forward. He also wished Ibrahim Mohamed Solih a successful presidential term.
