Former Minister of Defence and National Security Colonel (Rtd.) Mohamed Nazim states President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured he will be pardoned from his jail sentence.
The Criminal Court issued an 11 year jail sentence on Mohamed Nazim after finding him guilty for the possession of a fire arm at his residence in 2015. The High Court upheld the Criminal Court sentence. However, Supreme Court has deferred implementation of the jail sentence on the former defence minister earlier this month.
Upon returning to Maldives following the Supreme Court order, Nazim expressed his gratitude towards President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his support and courageousness. Highlighting how he was framed, Nazim said he hoped that no Maldivian have to undergo the same situation.
Furthermore, Nazim added the incoming coalition government will not give space to any such activities, assuring his firmness to work with the political leaders to establish peace in the country. Nazim also called on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to take full responsibility of his arrest, as he believes a residence of a serving cabinet minister cannot be raided without the permission of the president.
The former defence minister also held a separate meeting with the president-elect. However, the details of the meeting were not made public.
