Parliament unanimously passes motion to free Nasheed

Parliament of Maldives has passed a motion filed to grant full pardon for former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The motion filed by Parliamentarian Eva Abdulla was passed unanimously with 57 votes in favour, which was 8 votes more when the petition was filed at the parliament. The motion was submitted with 49 signatures including signatures of 13 ruling party parliamentarians.

While the motion has been passed, former President Nasheed has returned to Maldives following the Supreme Court verdict to defer implementing his 13-year jail sentence. Nasheed was arrested and tried in court on terrorism charges for ordering the illegal imprisonment of former Chief Judge of Criminal Court, during his presidency in January 2012.
