Parliament accepts motion to revoke the Anti-Defamation Act

Parliament of Maldives has accepted the motion to revoke the Anti-Defamation Act.

The motion to revoke the Anti-Defamation Act was submitted by Parliamentarian Abdulla Shahid. The parliament accepted the motion with 48 votes and 17 votes against. The Anti-Defamation Act was introduced in August 2016.

Moreover, during the first sitting held since Qasim Ibrahim was elected as Parliament Speaker, various issues were included in the agenda, debated and voted. In this regard, debates were held for the bills on the Maldives Media Commission and the bill to amend Maldives Banking Act.

Moreover, parliament passed motion to dismiss Ibrahim Riza from representing the parliament at Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

In addition, parliament passed motion filed to grant full pardon for former President Mohamed Nasheed unanimously with 57 votes in favour, which was 8 votes more when the petition was filed at the parliament. The motion was submitted with 49 signatures including signatures of 13 ruling party parliamentarians.
