President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has ratified the motion passed by the Parliament to repeal Anti-Defection Act.
In a tweet, Parliamentary Group Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik confirmed the president has ratified the motion as passed. The motion to abolish the Anti-Defection Act was submitted to parliament by Riyaz Rasheed on October 24 and passed on November 1.
Anti-Defection Act was introduced in 2017. Any parliamentarian who leaves the party they were elected from will lose their seats in parliament, according to the act.
