Faris Maumoon to represent parliament at JSC

Parliament of Maldives has passed to elect Ahmed Faris Maumoon as the parliamentary representative to Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Faris Maumoon, who was backed by the joint opposition, was approved unanimously with 67 votes in favour, with 1 abstention.

The ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) backed Ahmed Rasheed for the position. However, Ahmed Rasheed withdrew his name. Therefore, votes were only cast for Faris Maumoon.

On Monday, Parliament passed to dismiss Ibrahim Riza from representing parliament at JSC. The motion to dismiss Riza was submitted by Parliamentarian Mohamed Nazim on October 31. The motion was passed with 42 votes in favour and 24 voted against, with 1 abstention.

Riza was accused of violating procedure and justice in investigating and issuing penalties when complaints are filed against judges, in addition to making use of the opportunities available to him as a member of the ruling party and JSC to represent state companies in courts of law for high fees.
