US Ambassador calls on Maldivian Foreign Minister

US Ambassador to Maldives Alaina Teplitz has called on the Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Abdulla Shahid congratulated the ambassador on her appointment and discussed about ways to further strengthen and enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries on issues of bilateral significance such as institutional reform and defence cooperation.

Ambassador Teplitz also expressed the US Government’s readiness in working closely with the Government of Maldives to assist in the successful implementation of the administrations ambitious 100 day agenda and further strengthening democratic institutions, protecting freedom of expression, and ensuring the rule of law.

The foreign minister also highlighted the interest of the government to work closely with US, India and other Indian Ocean neighbours to secure a broader Indo-Pacific peace and security strategy in the region and assured Ambassador Teplitz the Maldives will continue working with the US on important global issues of mutual concern, including counter-terrorism, respect for fundamental human rights, as well as adaptation to climate change issues.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine Dr. Riad Malki also paid a courtesy call on the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Abdulla Shahid.

During the meeting held at Kurumba Maldives, Foreign Minister Shahid extended a warm welcome and expressed gratitude to Minister Malki for visiting Maldives to witness the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony. Minister Malki congratulated Minister Shahid on his appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Both Ministers exchanged ideas in enhancing cooperation between both countries and reflected on ways for strengthening the existing ties. Minister Shahid also reaffirmed the people and the Government of Maldives will continue to standby the people of Palestine and support the Palestinian cause.

Furthermore, Ambassador of Singapore Chua Thian Poh also called on Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and discussed on ways to promote collaboration and strengthen existing ties between Maldives and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan, Chair of Maldives-Japan Parliamentary Friendship League, Wataru Takeshita paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Shahid and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations including exchange of high level visits.

Special Envoy of the President of Serbia H.E. Zoran Vujic called on Foreign Minister Shahid and discussed about enhancing the existing bilateral ties between both countries.

Honorary Consul of Maldives in Busan, South Korea Eui-Bae Kim also paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Shahid and discussed on further collaboration and enhancing people to people contact between Maldives and South Korea.
