Hearings have concluded in the appeal filed by the Prosecutor General at the Supreme Court to review the 13-year jail sentence on former President Mohamed Nasheed.
At the hearing, Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi said the case was being reviewed as a final verdict has not been delivered in the case. The prosecution cited repeated concerns raised about the case by various entities and the case being of public interest as the reasons for the decision to appeal the case. The legal team representing Nasheed reiterated the verdict passed on the former president was unjust and unconstitutional.
Although hearings have been concluded, the bench did not reveal the date a sentence would be announced. The Supreme Court issued an order in October, to defer the implementation of the jail sentence on former President Nasheed, until the bench reviews the appeal filed by the Prosecutor General.
