United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative to Maldives Shoko Noda has lauded the increased number of women in the ministerial cabinet of the new government.
In a tweet, expressing 32% of the new cabinet is women, Shoko Noda stated women are making a big leap in Maldives. Shoko Noda highlighted globally only 10 countries have 30-35% of cabinet members as females, and only 6 countries has achieved gender parity in the cabinet. Furthermore, she expressed hope to see more women ministers in Maldives.
While the new cabinet consists of 19 ministries, 7 out of them are represented by women. In this regard, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resource and Agriculture, Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and Urban Development, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Ministry of Arts, Heritage and Culture are led by women.
This is a record amount of women representation in a single cabinet in Maldives.
