High Court of Maldives has overturned the 17-year jail sentence on former Prosecutor General Muhthaz Muhsin.
The former prosecutor general was sentenced to 17 years in prison in June 2016, after he was found guilty of conspiring to arrest former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom using a forged arrest warrant. However, High Court overturned the jail sentence of Muhuthaz Muhsin citing judicial and legal irregularities and stated he was sentenced without enough evidence.
Furthermore, High Court also cancelled two charges pressed against Muhthaz in connection with the arrest warrant; forging a document and false presentation of an official document. In addition, High Court also nullified the conviction against the co-defendant in the case, Chief Magistrate of Maamigili Magistrate Court Ahmed Nihan.
