High Court rules PPM Extraordinary Congress is valid

High Court of Maldives has ruled in favour of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on the case submitted regarding the validity of its Extraordinary National Congress.

High Court ruled the refusal by Elections Commission of Maldives to accept the decisions made during the Extraordinary National Congress, held immediately after the 2018 Presidential Election, was in violation of the laws and regulations.

During the court proceedings, Election Commission maintained it refused to accept the decisions made in the Congress as it was held in defiance of set procedures. However, PPM said it appealed the case to facilitate the resumption of party activities which have been halted with the rejection of the party decisions made at the congress. The party also added the congress was held with observers from the commission in attendance and the decisions made were communicated within the set timeframe. During the congress, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was elected as the party leader along with four deputy leaders.

Concluding the case, High Court ordered the Elections Commission to accept the decisions made during the Extraordinary National Congress and to update the changes brought to the Party Charter within 24 hours.
