Criminal Court dismisses terrorism charges on Saud Hussain

Criminal Court of Maldives has decided to dismiss the terrorism charges filed against Parliamentarian Saud Hussain. The Criminal Court made the decision citing lack of evidence at the trial.

The Prosecutor General's Office raised terrorism charges against Saud Hussain, alleging he plotted to assassinate High Court Judge Shujau Usman. In addition to Saud Hussain, terrorism charges on the same case was filed against former Senior Policy Executive at Ministry of Education Ibrahim Haneef. The charges against Saud were raised shortly after he defected to the opposition coalition in July 2017.

Following the dismissal of the case, in a tweet, Saud Hussain stated the charges against him raised by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom were baseless and purely political.

Saud was among the members who were re-instated by Supreme Court after a year since the Elections Commission ruled they have lost their seats at parliament.
