Maldives pledges to maintain Moratorium on Death Penalty

The Government of Maldives has decided to uphold the 65-year moratorium on the death penalty and will vote yes on the draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) entitled Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty.

In a tweet, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Maldivian administration will vote yes on the draft resolution in the UNGA.

The draft resolution was called for vote during the United Nations Commission on Human Rights meeting underway at Geneva, Switzerland. The Maldivian delegation is chaired by Minister at the President's Office Ahmed Naseem.

The six-decade moratorium on capital punishment in Maldives was lifted by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in 2014. However, no executions were performed due to various reasons.
