Parliament of Maldives has amended the Constitution of Maldives dismissing the age cap for presidential candidacy. The amendment was passed unanimously with the vote of all parliamentarians who attended the session.
A presidential candidate must be aged between 35-65 years, according to an amendment brought to the constitution in 2015. However, a person who is of 35 years can contest as a presidential candidate and it does not state an age cap for the position, according to the latest amendment.
While submitting the amendment, Parliamentarian Ali Arif revealed he submitted the bill to abolish the amendment to eliminate the constitutional block to elderly citizens to run for presidency.
