Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated he will submit a case to the Supreme Court if the two presidential commissions formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are granted constitutional powers. The former president made the remarks at a press conference while answering a question posed by a journalist.
Former President Yameen said he does not believe such powers and authorities should be granted to a presidential commission. Yameen highlighted granting constitutional powers to commissions will disable the investigative authorities of the state. The powers bestowed to the president under Article 115 of constitution are not meant to create such commissions, he further added.
Commission on Investigation of Murder and Enforced Disappearances was established aiming to investigate the cases that were not given a preferable amount of attention to fully investigate the murdered individuals and disappeared people from January 1, 2012 to November 17, 2018 and the Commission of Corruption and Asset Recovery was formed aiming to recover state assets and investigating corruption of government officials.
President Solih has requested the Parliament to grant the commissions constitutional powers.
