Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal has stated reducing the internet charges in Maldives will further boost the economic growth of the country.
The first discussions held since assuming his ministerial post was to reduce the internet rates in Maldives, said Minister Maleeh Jamaal speaking at a programme aired on VTV. The minister added discussions were held with Ooredoo Maldives, Dhiraagu and Telecommunication Authority of Maldives. During the discussions, he learned the internet rates can be reduced, revealed the minister.
Minister Maleeh expressed the rate of economic growth is simultaneously connected with the internet rates and its speed. Highlighting internet plays a major role in connecting Maldives with other countries, the minister said the rate of internet prices being reduced will further boost the rate of economic growth.
Moreover, Minister Maleeh stated while the economy of Maldives is transforming to a digital economy, it is crucial to establish a fast and affordable internet network in the country. He assured internet rates will be reduced even if that means bringing new service operators or installing more cables.
Reducing the internet rates in Maldives is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
