BML says it is not linked with MMPRC corruption scandal

Bank of Maldives (BML) has revealed it was not in any way linked with the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

In a statement issued in the wake of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom expressing the national bank should be responsible for the embezzlement of state funds from MMPRC, BML said it operates as per the laws and regulations of Maldives and follows the international best practices. Noting it was not involved or assisted in any way to embezzle millions of dollars made as payments for resort leases and other tourism related services, the bank said it would not comment any further as the case is under investigation by the relevant authorities.

In a recent press conference, the former president said the embezzlement took place via the banking system in the country and therefore, the banks should be held responsible for the largest corruption case in Maldives.
