Local councils can function properly if they operate independently: Vice President

Vice President Faisal Naseem has said the local councils can function properly if they are granted the powers and authority to operate independently.

While meeting with the city council during his visit to Addu City, Vice President Faisal Naseem said the administration believes the councils can work for the progress and the development of the relevant islands and cities if given the opportunity and the authority to function without interference from the central government. He said the councils must be given the power to plan and execute the development agendas for the whole country to progress equally.

During his visit to the second largest city in Maldives, the vice president took a tour of Hithadhoo Council and met with the councillors. Moreover, he also toured the Family and Children’s Centre, Hithadhoo Aftercare Rehabilitation Centre, Hithadhoo Regional Hospital and met with the employees working at these institutes.

Vice President Naseem also attended a Children’s Festival organised by the Maldivian Red Crescent, Seenu Branch and visited the Equatorial Convention Centre, to inquire about the progress of the tertiary hospital which is currently under development.

Furthermore, the vice president took a tour of Maradhoo Health Centre and Maradhoo-Feydhoo Dhamanaveshi and met with the employees working at the institutes. He inquired from the staff on the current status of the institutes and the challenges being faced.

The vice president further took a tour of Feydhoo Health Centre. He also visited the patients admitted at the Health Centre and met with the employees working at the Health Centre and inquired from the staff on the current status of the institute, and the challenges being faced.

Vice President Faisal Naseem will visit Fuvahmulah City before concluding his tour.
