President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated freedom of press is crucial in order to see the administration progressing on the right track. The president made the statement while addressing the gathering at the ceremony held to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Maldivian Journalism.
The Maldivian Constitution came to existence with the promise of creating an independent platform for journalism, according to the president. However, the 75-year journey of journalism was scattered with attempts at controlling the media and the current administration vows to change it and create a free, independent environment for journalists where freedom of expression will always be encouraged.
In his speech, President Solih highlighted in the modern day democracy, journalism is a self-regulated system and stated it would be the best option for Maldives as well. He further stated it would allow the Maldivian media to create its own limits where it would be responsible to create a best practice and to set acceptable standards to follow through while disseminating information to the public.
Noting although not written in law, journalism is the fourth estate and the most influential power of the state. He said therefore, he did not believe in legal limitations for journalism. The president also noted while the courage of journalists is celebrated, it is also important to remember those that have been lost.
Furthermore, President Solih stated the purpose of creating the Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances is to solve cases such as the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan and the brutal murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed and appealed to all members of the commission to commence their work and find the reality of the cases. Speaking in this regard, the president also noted the administration would never go after journalists for expressing a certain thought, and emphasised that freedom of speech is necessary for the longevity of the administration.
During the ceremony, several notable individuals were presented with awards to appreciate their efforts and dedication in enhancing journalism in Maldives.
