Yameen summoned to police, questioned about 2 separate cases

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated he was summoned to police regarding the investigation of two cases alleging financial fraud.

Addressing the media after being summoned to the police, former President Yameen said he was questioned in connection with two separate cases. The former president said one of the cases was in connection to a deposit made to his account which he claimed was campaign funds. He said the other case was regarding a cheque written by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Elucidating, Yameen said the funds deposited in his account was used for the campaign of presidential election. When asked about the MMPRC case, he said the case has already been investigated and the information should be extracted from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Yameen reiterated his stance that the USD 1 million in question is in the care of ACC. He added it is bothersome he is being questioned about money in his account.

Noting he was not the sole presidential candidate, Yameen demanded investigations into incumbent president and fellow candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's campaign funds as well, if an investigation of that nature is underway. He added no charges have been levelled against him and the fact he is being questioned without being charged of a crime is troublesome. He also said financial transactions through his account are in plain sight and therefore, if any questionable issue was observed, investigative authorities should have already conducted an investigation.
