Male' City Council has held discussion with stakeholders in the construction sector on finding issues they face and means through which these issues can be solved.
During the discussion attended by a large majority of companies active in the construction sector, many stakeholders raised their concerns about issues, especially when it came to bureaucracy. In this regard, they noted the difficulties in attaining necessary permits from relevant ministries. They also noted the public concerns about the dewatering pipes lining pavements of the capital city and the inconveniences they cause to pedestrians.
At the meeting, the City Council noted negligence with regard to public safety including using rope slings to lift heavy items without proper safety mechanisms in place. Stakeholders noted the number of fees levied on construction work and requested authorities to review the fee structure to see if it fits under any set policy. They requested authorities to funnel funds received as construction fees to ensure safety on construction sites.
Addressing the press after the discussion, Mayor of Male' Shifa Mohamed said this was one step towards strengthening the Maldivian construction sector.
