Death penalty will be implemented once judicial unbiased

Maldives has revealed the death penalty will be implemented once the judicial system has gained the trust of the citizens. Permanent Representative of Maldives to United Nations Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed made the remarks revealing the stand of the government of Maldives on implementing the death penalty.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly before voting, Dr. Ali Naseer revealed the revised penal code published in 2014 states the situations where death penalty must be implemented, adding the death penalty must be implemented in Maldives according to the Islamic Shariah.

However, Dr. Ali Naseer added a fair and unbiased judicial system must be established for the death penalty to be implemented in Maldives. Moreover, he further revealed until then, death penalty will not be implemented in Maldives, assuring the government will work towards judicial reform.

Maldives voted against the United Nations moratorium on the use of the death penalty. It has been 60 years since a death sentence was implemented in Maldives.
