ACC orders to nullify agreement with Haycarb

Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives (ACC) has ordered to nullify the agreements signed by the previous administration to establish sewerage facilities in 20 islands. ACC ordered President's Office, Ministry of Finance and Fenaka Corporation Limited to nullify the agreements as the state will face unrecoverable amount of loss.

On July 31, the previous administration contracted Sri Lankan-based Haycarb Private Limited to establish sewerage facilities in 20 islands. Under the agreement, sewerage facilities would be established in Maarandhoo and Vashafaru in Haa Alifu Atoll, Vaikaradhoo and Finey in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Foakaidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Maafaru and Lhohi in Noonu Atoll, Kinolhas in Raa Atoll, Maalhos and Goidhoo in Baa Atoll, Olhuvelifushi in Lhaviyani Atoll, Gulhi in Kaafu Atoll, Felidhoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, Keyodhoo in Vaavu Atoll. Dhigurah in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Hirilandhoo in Thaa Atoll, Dhehvadhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Hoadehdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Haycarb was contracted the project to be completed within a period of one and half years and at a cost of USD 53 million.

Citing the investigations and information received, ACC alleged the project was contracted with influence to gain financial advantages, as the project was awarded for an estimated price to establish sewerage facilities in 40 islands. ACC said Fenaka does not have the financial capacity to conduct such a huge project, adding the previous administration has also agreed to take a loan to finance the project.
