Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated the positive outcome of efforts exerted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to gain trust in international arena are already visible. The foreign minister made the remarks during his trip accompanying President Solih on his state visit to India.
Speaking to PSM News while at Agra, Foreign Minister Shahid noted the Maldivian foreign policy in the past five years was shaped to create unrest between India and China, adding relations with neighbouring countries diminished as a result. However, the minister said the recent trip of President Solih has solved all the problems between Maldives and India, highlighting the visa leniency agreement shows the importance attached by the Indian government to Maldives.
Furthermore, the minister also expressed gratitude towards the financial agreements settled by Indian government to assist Maldives in its debt and budget deficiency. Highlighting on the four key agreements signed during the trip, Foreign Minister Shahid said the agreements signed is an important step towards establishing strong relations with more countries.
Moreover, Foreign Minister assured that no military pacts were signed during the trip adding, however, talks were held on enhancing military training programmes. Reiterating the trip will not weaken relations with other countries, Minister Shahid said China will always be an important partner to Maldives.
On conclusion, the foreign minister revealed plans of President Solih to visit Abu Dhabi early next year.
