Japan reaffirms commitment to further strengthening historic, friendly relations to Maldives

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Taro Kono.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Minister Shahid recalled his visit to Japan in 2007 to open the Embassy of Maldives in Tokyo and noted it marked a new era in the Maldives-Japan relations. Foreign Minister Kono warmly welcomed Minister Shahid back to Japan and reaffirmed Tokyo's commitment to further strengthening the historic and friendly relations between the two countries. Discussions also ensued pertaining to furthering the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development.

Foreign Minister Shahid also recognised and thanked the Government of Japan and its people for the continued support to Maldives throughout its development journey, which is prominently featured across many areas, including fisheries, environment, education and disaster reduction.

Minister Shahid is on an official visit to Japan from December 19-23. He is accompanied by Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer and Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, along with officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives and the Embassy of Maldives in Japan.
