President says coalition talks have made progress

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said progress has been made in solving the issues regarding competing in the parliamentary elections as a coalition as a result of extensive discussions held with coalition party leaders. President Solih made the remarks at a media briefing held at Hotel Jen following the meeting held with the four coalition leaders.

The president stated the leaders reached an agreement on a policy to compete in the parliamentary elections as a coalition, adding discussions were held to make swift decisions. All arrangements and agreements will be decided with the backing of all coalition leaders, he noted.

Furthermore, former President Mohamed Nasheed said Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in no situation decided to complete for all 87 constituencies. In this regard, Nasheed added MDP wishes to compete for 86 constituencies, stating the decision might not be what the other leaders agree.

Meanwhile, Leader of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim revealed differences have arisen within party members due the delay in the procedure to follow in the upcoming elections. However, he added Jumhooree Party does not wish to compete for all constituencies, despite the ambitions of MDP.

Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
