Former President submits documents to form new political party

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has submitted documents to form People's National Congress. On behalf of the former president, the necessary documents were submitted at the Elections Commission by Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Speaking to PSM News, president of the electoral body Ahmed Shareef said permission will be granted to People's National Congress to function as a political party if all necessary documents are in order, adding if any issues are identified, a deadline will be provided for resubmission.

Former President Yameen is seeking to form a new political party at a time when former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom submitted a case at Civil Court regarding the validity of the leadership of PPM. The decision to form a new party was made as the future of PPM is still undecided with the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on April 6, according to Yameen.
