Hithadhoo Regional Hospital in Addu City has performed its first ever proximal femoral nailing, commonly known as joint hip surgery.
The team of doctors who performed the surgery were Consultant in Orthopaedics and In charge of Medical Department in Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital Dr. Azim Abdul Shakoor and doctors from the Radiology Department in Hithadhoo Regional Hospital. The surgery performed on an 89 year old woman was successfully completed.
Speaking to PSM News, Dr. Azim noted the importance of performing such surgeries in the atolls, to minimise critical patients making expensive travels to the capital city. He further said the biggest challenge faced in performing such surgeries in the atolls is the lack of necessary equipment.
In efforts to enhance healthcare services provided in the atolls, the government has revealed plans to develop three tertiary hospitals across the country.
