Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed the new seaplane terminal developed at Velana International Airport (VIA) will begin operations next year. Development of the new seaplane terminal is one of the largest projects embarked as part of the billion dollar airport expansion project.
Even though it has been previously informed the development will be completed this year, MACL has announced the new seaplane terminal will be brought to operation in September 2019. Following the foundation laying of the 28,000 square metre terminal, currently construction of the terminal structure is underway. MACL revealed the structure of the terminal can be completed by June 2019, revealed MACL. A separate building for aircraft maintenance will also be constructed as part of the new seaplane development project, according to MACL.
The seaplane terminal project is conducted at a cost of USD 50 million by China's Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG).
