MDP announces party primaries will be held on January 18

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced its party primaries on January 18.

Speaking at a press conference, member of the team selected to oversee the party primaries, Ibrahim Waheed assured the process to elect candidates to compete in the parliamentary elections will be fully transparent. He added the primaries will be held from 1430 hours to 2000 hours on January 18. However, the duration could be extended depending on certain factors.

Moreover, Ibrahim Waheed revealed the voting process will be held at MDP headquarters and other social centres across the country. MDP decided to contest in all 87 constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary election. However, candidates expressed interest to contest in 86 constituencies.

The main ruling party of the government coalition has granted party tickets to 9 contestants without primaries. Therefore, primaries will be held for 77 constituencies on January 18.

The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
