Supreme Court establishes Judicial Council

Supreme Court of Maldives has established a Judicial Council to formulate the policies to ensure justice. The council was formed under a resolution from the Supreme Court in reference to Articles 7, 141-B and 156 of the constitution.

The main task of the Judicial Council is to compile important rules and regulations to enhance the operations of the courts and to pave way for the courts to follow the same procedures, according to the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Council comprises of Chief Justice, Supreme Court judges, Chief Judge of High Court, a Magistrate of Civil Court, a Magistrate of Criminal Court, a Magistrate of Juvenile Court, a Magistrate of Drug Court and two magistrates selected from senior magistrates serving in the courts.

The Judicial Council will be chaired by Chief Justice.
