President appoints a commanding officer of the Presidential Guards

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Colonel Abdulla Zuhuree as the Commanding Officer of the Presidential Guards. Colonel Zuhuree has previously served as the Commanding Officer at Fire and Rescue Service.

Following the appointment, Colonel Ibrahim Rasheed who had until now served as the Commanding Officer of the Presidential Guards has been appointed as the Commanding Officer at the Southern Area. Meanwhile, former Commanding Officer at the Southern Area Abdulla Ibrahim has been appointed as the Commanding Officer at Fire and Rescue Service.

The Presidential Guards was established in 2015 after abolishing the Special Protection Group (SPG) tasked with the role of providing security for the president. The change was made following the blast in the presidential speed launch during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Since then, Maldives National Defence Force has strengthened the security provided for the president.
