Key foreign policy principle of the government is to safeguard the national interest

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid said the key foreign policy principle of the government is to safeguard the national interest of the state and of Maldivian citizens.

“In President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, the key principle of foreign policy comprises of protecting the national interest of State and Maldivian citizens," Foreign Minister Shahid said in his opening remarks at the Briefing Programme for the Ambassadors held at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Briefing Programme for the Ambassadors is a two-day programme organised by Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM) for the nominated ambassadors, deputy ambassadors and foreign service officers.

“Protecting the national interest of the state and citizen will result beneficial for Maldivians and maintain the independence of our country,’’ the minister enlightened the key foreign policy principle. In his remarks, he also noted democracy, human rights and climate change diplomacy are the three key pillars of the foreign policy.

Speaking further, Minister Shahid said it must be remembered that those working in diplomatic missions are posted abroad to serve the people of the Maldives. Additionally, he advised the newly appointed ambassadors and deputy ambassadors to give utmost importance to providing assistance to Maldivians who face issues abroad.

The minister had reaffirmed the foreign ministry will give priority to solving consular issues faced by Maldivians abroad in the future.
