Government Oversight Committee cast doubt on ministry mandates

Chair of the Government Oversight Committee Riyaz Rasheed has said cabinet ministers are not aware of the mandates of their respective ministries, with the mandates of almost all government ministries have been changed since the new administration took office. Riyaz Rasheed made the comment at the committee meeting held to finalise a deadline to submit the issue forwarded to the committee regarding the mandate of the ministries.

Speaking in this regard, Riyaz said even though the constitution states the mandate of Attorney General, the mandate of Attorney General's Office and some ministries are not clear.

Meanwhile, some members of the committee expressed concerns about the development projects being changed under Ministry of Planning and Urban Development which was previously managed by Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.

In this regard, Parliamentarian Ali Arif stated planning ministry is now mandated to conduct construction projects and Infrastructure projects along with major development projects. In addition, he revealed previously water and sewerage projects are monitored and conducted by Ministry of Environment and Energy, which has now been changed under planning ministry adding now, with the environment ministry only required to manage such projects.

However, all members agreed to swiftly finalise the mandates as required by the administration.
