Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has officially handed over the tasks and responsibilities it had handled in Addu City to the local council.
The handover took place at a special function held at the Secretariat of Addu City Council. The function was attended by the Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation Ahmed Adil and other senior officials.
Addressing the function the state minister noted prior to the establishment of a branch of the ministry in Addu City, the responsibilities were overseen by the local council. He added the vision of the administration is to ensure proximity in providing services such as transportation that are directly linked to the citizens.
With the change, registration of vehicles and vessels and issuing driving licenses would come under the jurisdiction of the city council, in addition to being the parent body for ensuring road worthiness and sea worthiness for vehicles and vessels registered in the city.
It is a vision of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to restore powers and authorities confiscated from local councils during the previous administration. The goal has been included in the first 100-day pledges.
