Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim says discussions were held with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih about maintaining the coalition agreement on parliamentary elections, revealing however, he was informed the main ruling party will not act in accordance with the agreement.
At a gathering held at the main headquarters of JP, Qasim Ibrahim stated the initial agreement was disregarded by parties in the government coalition. In this regard, Qasim alleged Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has disregarded the agreement established by the four coalition leaders and President Solih.
Qasim expressed Jumhooree party opened candidacy opportunities, following a party council meeting, as the coalition parties failed to establish a mutual agreement to compete in the parliamentary elections. Previously, he had expressed readiness to break away from the coalition with the main ruling party and to join with other political parties for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Other coalition partners, Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) and Adhaalath Party (AP) have also announced they would field candidates for the elections. However, neither MRM nor AP have expressed any interest to join with JP against the main ruling party for the elections.
