Foreign Minister holds a meeting with US State Department

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has met with senior officials of the US Department of State.

At the meeting held with Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Ambassador Alice Wells, discussions were held on ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation between Maldives and the US, including strengthening governance and democratic consolidation in Maldives.

Foreign Minister Shahid also met with the Under Secretary for Political Affairs David Hale and exchanged views on further strengthening future cooperation between Maldives and the US. During the meeting, Minister Shahid noted the US Indo-Pacific Strategy is a source of good for the Maldives and for the stability of the Indian Ocean.

Furthermore, as part of the existing cooperation between Maldives and the US on counter-terrorism, Minister Shahid also met with Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counter-terrorism at the State Department Nathan A. Sales and explored avenues for further cooperation, including future programmes on counter-terrorism.

The foreign minister was accompanied in the meetings by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN and Ambassador to the US Ali Naseer Mohamed.
