Minimum wage will be decided after extensive discussions

Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has revealed the minimum wage of Maldives will be decided after extensive discussions with all the sectors.

Speaking to PSM News, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail stated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has now granted permission to form the minimum wage board, which will be formed in the upcoming days.

The advisory board which will be formed under the Employment Act will assess the work done by a staff and decide on a minimum rate as salary for the particular post. The minimum wage board will comprise of 5 appointed members by the president, according to the act.

Furthermore, the economic minister noted the five-member board will comprise of a representative from Ministry of Economic Development, 2 individuals representing employers and two individuals representing employees.

Noting setting up a minimum wage is not an easy task, the minister said necessary surveys and researches will be completed before making a decision. However, he expressed hope to decide on a minimum wage policy which will be beneficial to everyone.

Designating a minimum wage is an electoral pledge of the president.
