High Court orders Adeeb to be transferred to house arrest

High Court of Maldives has ordered to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest until the case filed regarding his medical procedure is concluded.

A case has been filed on behalf of Adeeb alleging lack of necessary health care in prison and requesting to attain medical treatment from abroad. However, the Civil Court discontinued the case, stating the procedures followed under the regulation to provide medical care for inmates from abroad was not completed.

At the appeal hearing, Adeeb requested to be transferred under house arrest until the end of trial. During the appeal hearing held on Monday, the state protested there were no grounds to grant the request. Adeeb was recently in house arrest under a doctor recommendation and was transferred back to prison after a period of two months, the state attorneys told the court.

Noting the procedures to issue a temporary order were also not completed, the state affirmed doctors did not renew any recommendations to keep Adeeb in house arrest. Furthermore, the state attorneys highlighted Adeeb‘s prison situation, mentioning he is kept in an air-conditioned VIP cell, with access to television, means to exercise and the services of a nurse.

However, Adeeb responded that he was transferred back to prison before the period of his house arrest was complete, adding prison has deteriorated his health condition.

On conclusion, the judges unanimously agreed to issue a temporary order to transfer Adeeb to house arrest.
